Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. What criteria should I use when selecting a hummingbird feeder?

A. Make sure it is one that will be easy to clean and fill, especially since you will need to clean the feeder every few days. If you are worried about bees and wasps or ants invading the feeder, purchase a hummingbird feeder with bee guards.

Q. How do I clean my hummingbird feeders?

A. Hummingbird feeders need to be cleaned every 1-2 weeks. Use hot water and a bottle brush, along with mild soap; be sure to rinse thoroughly.

The Perky-Pet cleaning mop is specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning hummingbird feeders, and is very convenient to use. This cleaning mop can also be used on seed feeders and oriole feeders for those small, tight spaces that are difficult to reach.

Q. What is the importance of providing water for hummingbirds?

A. Hummingbirds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need nectar. Hummingbirds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide hummingbirds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for hummingbirds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy.

METAL BASE TOXIC to HUMMINGBIRDS
By picky reader - December 16, 2013

As a veterinarian, I would advise against purchasing this product. The metal pan base appears to be galvanized, which means it is coated with a layer of zinc to prevent rusting. If so, that zinc will leach into the water and is toxic to birds. I returned mine for this reason. Feeders containing copper should also be avoided, since copper toxicity is also problem for birds. Also avoid hummingbird food containing red dye, which is associated with birth defects. (Instead just use a 1:4 mixture of sugar to unsoftened water; which is the same thing, without the harmful dye). Since you probably don''t intend to harm the birds you are trying to help, I would advise choosing different products. If you have already purchased these products, I would advise returning them or just throwing them away. You won''t see the dead hummingbirds, new ones will keep coming to the feeder, but you may be killing them off without realizing it. Even if they put a clear coating over the metal, it wouldn''t last long enough to prevent the hazard. It''s just a bad material for what would appear to otherwise be a nice feeder.

Shame on you Perky-Pet. BEWARE! This feeder not only doesn''t attract hummingbirds, it can kill them. I purchased the feeder this summer after reading positive reviews. At the time of my purchase I either missed the other reviews warning about the issue of the galvanized steel base or these reviews weren''t posted back then. You can see others have had the issue with the toxicity of the metal base and the adverse reaction it has with hummingbirds.

I purchased this particular feeder to replace a feeder that broke when I dropped it. I was drawn to the metal base because it didn''t look as cheap and "plasticy" as most models with the standard red, plastic base. Also, I was attracted to the large-mouthed mason jar for easy cleaning. Over the course of 5 months this feeder attracted the same number of hummingbirds but they flew away the instant they tasted the nectar. I make my own nectar using the standard 4:1 water to sugar ratio (no coloring) and have always attracted a large number of hummingbirds. At first I tried changing my nectar recipe and cleaning method but the hummingbirds never fed from the feeder. Then, last week I knew something was wrong when I discovered a DEAD hummingbird beneath the feeder. I went back on Amazon to read warnings of other owners with similar toxicity issues. I feel terrible and want to warn others with this feeder - if hummingbirds aren''t feeding; STOP USING THIS FEEDER. Maybe some of us just got a bad production run as other reviewers really like the feeder (I did before I knew about the issue). I feel Perky-Pet owes it''s customers an explanation and, more importantly, a warning.

Pros
Attractive - clean lines, not too ornate, contemporary look
Durable - metal base won''t crack or break if dropped during cleaning
Easy to Clean - wide mason jar makes it easy to clean
Capacity - jar holds large quantity of nectar

Cons
Toxic - metal base creates zinc poisoning resulting in nectar that is harmful to hummingbirds.
Death - too much zinc poisoning can kill hummingbirds

i was very happy to see such a good looking hummingbird feeder. couldnt wait to get to set this thing up because of its looks and capacity and ease of cleaning. then i found out after about 3 weeks of watching my hummers attempting to feed from it but in the end avoiding it. first i thought it was the color of the flowers white and yellow but after closer inspection, this base is made of galvanized metal and when u add ur nectar it will have a reaction with the galvanizing in the base making the nectar taste funny. everyone knows how sensitive hummers are to chemicals i am some what suprised that perky pet came out with this feeder with a galvanized base. my opinion the base would be better if painted, powder coated or even plastic. Update: contacted perky pet via email and phone and left this same review. also sent pictures of the chemical reaction from the nectar to the galvanizing. they didn''t allow the review on there web sight and it seemed not to care about the problem. also i had as many as a dozen hummers coming to my two other feeders which i left in place. now i have only about 3 to 4 left. im not saying that this chemical reaction had anything to do with this but i still have MIA hummers. Update: 2-1-14... you can see on the comments that perky pet sounded like they were real concerned about the customer. well after speaking with them like 3 times they wanted me to send back the feeder so reluctantly i sent the feeder to perky pet incurring the shipping cost not to mention the time and effort to box it up and drive it to the local ups store and as i said ship it back to them. that was several months ago. i have yet to recrecive an email, an exchange, refund or much less a phone call. beware of perky pet. they could care less about the product they sell much less the customer... UPDATE: 2-7-14. I called perky pet and spoke with a customer service rep. told them about the situation that i have explained in this review. they let me pick out a feeder that was about the same price and said they would ship it asap. low and behold the feeder came 2-12-14. they also wanted me to take down my negative post after receiving the new feeder. i think ill leave it up so people can see it took nearly 8 months to resolve this issue.

Just got it out again for spring and found both were rusted in lowest metal bases. Spoke to nice woman at PerkyPet. She said they do not sell replacement bases and the bases are supposed to be powder coated. I asked her to tell company about the numerous poor reviews for the base and suggest a replaceable plastic (or other rust-free material) base. Otherwise, guess this will be a 1 more time purchase until I find something better. Too bad

Another Perky Pet product that has failed gloriously. For being the "largest" bird feeder manufacturer, one would think that they would have the experience/knowledge to make decent feeders. Considering all the smaller manufacturers that they have bought out etc.....Galvanizing a poor choice for a coating for a base as noted previously by a veterinarian in earlier comments . The galvanizing apparently is so poorly applied that it rusted through inside of a few months. I purchased mine January 14, 2017, it started to rust within a few months , today is May 28th, 2017 and I will no longer use this feeder . In my opinion it as toxic to the birds and they stopped using long ago anyway. I live in the dry Sonoran desert of ARIDzona so if I have a problem (plus my area is still in drought having seen likely less than 1 and 1/2 inches of rain since January.) So excessive moisture is not the problem coming back to the feeder. Many others have commented on the rusting problem yet Perky pet still proudly sells this product . RUST contaminates the nectar, when a person looks through the lid of a transparent feeder, the inside if the lower basin is a highly humid area. Moisture gathering on the inside of the roof dripping down into the nectar pool carrying rust (Iron) into the nectar. Hummingbirds die from iron toxicity.

I have tried and tried to find a stainless steel, or verified food grade plastic base container feeder. I have spoken to Perky Pet, and they say Cornell U has no problem with their products. Yeah, right. They also manufacture a toxic red #40 dye hummingbird nectar filled with a paragraph of ingredients and preservatives, that they try to fob off on unsuspecting people, who don''t do research, or are to lazy to make nectar. I bought two of these feeders after much research, mainly because the jar is glass with a wide opening and can be cleaned to eliminate any mold or biofilm issues. It is, of course, painted red glass, and the paint comes off eventually, as does the paint on the bottom feeder. These micro flakes get into the nectar, and now I find out that the zinc is toxic, too! I am furious that a company puts these products out there. Also, they rust out eventually. When I spoke with Perky P, I said there are plenty of people who would pay twice the amount for a decent, non-toxic stainless steel feeder. Guess I am going to have to design one, have it made, and market it. I am angry at this company!

This is the 3rd time I''ve had to dump the contents because of this discoloration.
The metal base is not coated to hold anything edible. This is the color of my clear hummingbird fluid after a few days. I have 3 other feeders, metal and plastic, that I use the same fluid in and they are perfectly clear until the fluid is gone. I''d like to know if this is harming our hummingbirds. I''ll be taking this to our local ag class at the college to be tested.
Highly DO NOT RECOMMEND using this feeder.

Bought this feeder 5.12.2015. The day after I received it I washed it to make sure it was clean inside for the birds, and the blue color started "peeling" off. The glass is NOT colored, but coated with some kind of cheap, crappy color coating. About a month after having it in use it started leaking a little through the rivet in the bottom of the metal part (see photos). Just started using it again this month and it leaked half a jar of hummer food overnight through the rivet. There is no way to stop the leak. DON''T BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK! If I could now return it or get my money back, I definitely would.

We have been using this feeder for a couple of weeks. Other than loving the look of it we purchased this one because it is made out of metal and glass rather than plastic. The hummingbirds love it. But after washing it three times and hanging it up this week it''s started to leak where the metal base meets the metal top with the flowers mounted to it. It''s been handled gently each cleaning and I can''t see a reason for the leaking other than poor tolerances between the two parts. There is no seal at this connection, just the pressure of the metal against metal. I''ve taken it down, cleaned it and carefully put it back together. Still leaking.

Came placed upright in open, used Amazon box with another customer''s info all over shipping label, proper bubble wrap/packing (1 base barely screwed on, 1 base on so tight nearly could not get off, but, zero plastic, all parts some type of metals - so no direct hot sun, hopefully no rusting). Love the size (equivalent to actual Ball/Mason wide-mouth jars) and my hummers will go through it in a couple days. Placed outside in the usual spot, next to old smaller feeder this morning - hummers not happy about them - yet. Will try to update on quality in a few weeks.

This is an attractive feeder (to humans), but that''s not really the point when you''re trying to attract hummingbirds. So far, I haven''t seen any hummingbirds on this feeder, yet another similar style with pink glass I purchased locally has brought birds to the feeder. If you''re in an area where there are a lot of hummingbirds, this MIGHT work for you, but there are better options. I haven''t had any leaking issues, however if you don''t want to pour out a bunch of nectar when putting it on a pole, you''ll need to add a hook because what it comes with is too tight to the glass and requires you to turn it completely sideways to install.
